Designing And Selling A Custom Coloring Book

Blog

Creating your own coloring book is an excellent way to showcase your art while encouraging people to further customize the images. There are several factors you need to consider to make your coloring book work for a wide range of consumers.

Designing Images

With many open-source artistic programs available for use, you should be able to find a program that will help you with both creating your coloring pages and turning them into a book. If you do not create your pages directly within the software, you will need to be able to scan images into the software to create a digital version of your work. Fortunately, in some instances, you can take pictures of your artwork with your smartphone and have it loaded into the software if you do not have a scanner. If you are scanning your work into the software, some programs are capable of making an outline of the picture, but you may need to add outlines for the fine details. When possible, it is better to design your pages directly in software that is capable of creating SVG (scalable vector graphic) files. This allows you to manipulate the size of the images without distortion.

Paper And Ink

A coloring book can include a wide variety of mediums. Most people think of a traditional coloring book as one that requires the use of dry mediums, such as crayons or colored pencils. However, you can design coloring pages that can be used with watercolor paints, markers, or acrylic paints, which may be more consistent with being a "paint by number." The type of medium you want people to use will dictate the type of paper you want for your book. If you expect people will use either wet or dry media, you will want your coloring pages printed on mixed media paper or even smooth watercolor paper. Additionally, the ink used in printing pages will be important, particularly if you expect some people will use wet media. Not only do you need the book printed in waterproof ink, but you may need ink that is also alcohol-proof since some people may want to color with alcohol markers. The book should be printed in permanent ink to make it suitable for virtually any type of media.

Physical And Digital Books

Ideally, you should be prepared to have your book available in both physical and digital copies. The physical copies should be bound in such a way that it is easy for people to use. Spiral binding is the most forgiving because it will allow people to open the book completely and keep the pages flat. Even with spiral binding, each page should be perforated, so the customer can remove pages if they want to work on the page individually or remove the page to put in a frame or hang on the wall. If your book is available in digital format, you should include formats that allow people to work on the page digitally. Digital art is a popular format and many people color or draw on their phones or computers. The digital version should be printable so customers can print the images on their ideal paper and work on them.

Creating a custom coloring book is one way to turn your art into a source of income. Being mindful of the nuances of creating a coloring book will give customers many media options to use when working on the pages.

Talking About Printing Flyers

Hello, I'm Cass O'Connell. In an effort to maintain a decent sized customer base, I always send out flyers to new areas around my region. I pick the areas according to the demographic description provided by my state. I have a specific range of customers I want to attract. The flyers I use are printed by a professional company that offers a wide variety of paper and ink types. The flyers are also designed by that same entity. All of the artwork used on the flyers beautifully encapsulates the purpose of my company. I would like to share my experience with using printing services for my flyer needs. I will talk about the materials, tools and techniques used to print my flyers. Thank you.
